Rising demand: How utilities can navigate surging electricity needs
New electric demand is stressing the electric grid. What makes this so challenging for utilities is that this increase wasn’t forecast until very recently.
By 2028, U.S. electricity demand could increase by an average of 9% while peak demand for electricity could increase by an average of 5%.
The latest demand projections are significantly higher than those made as recently as 2023. The divergence between last year’s projections and current projections is broad by 2033—and only continues to grow in the coming decades.
